Promoting Excellence in Gin Distillation Worldwide

Welcome to The Gin Guild

We are the global home of gin producers, experts and enthusiasts committed to upholding excellence, protecting the spirit’s heritage and shaping the future of gin.

We represent the gin industry as a whole. Supported by the major founding gin producers, Bacardi, Diageo, William Grant and Sons and Pernod Ricard, The Gin Guild brings together distillers, brand owners, trade professionals and partners from across production, distribution, marketing and hospitality. Our mission is to foster quality, inspire innovation and protect the integrity of gin worldwide.

We aim to promote the gin category across the globe, enhancing its image and widening its appeal to worldwide consumers.

We don’t promote individual brands; we want to bring together the broadest range of products and producers, as well as everyone associated with the wider industry, to create a forum for all those involved in gin production, sales, marketing, distribution and the bar trade.

Our Leadership Team

The Gin Guild’s Board of Directors brings together industry professionals from craft distillers to legacy brand specialists, united by a commitment to quality, heritage, sustainability and community across the global gin sector.

At the head of the Board is Christopher Hayman, who is also chairman of family company Hayman Distillers. Other long‑standing members include Charles Maxwell, with a deep family heritage in gin distillation, and Martin Riley who contributes expertise in brand management and global distribution, supporting the Guild’s strategic developmen. Jim Long’s experience in marketing, product development and botanicals also offers broad industry insight.

Recent additions reflect the Guild’s evolving, global outlook. Sophie Best of Silent Pool Gin and Andrew Parsons, Master Distiller at Sky Wave Gin, bring energy, entrepreneurial experience and commitment to supporting emerging distillers and industry-wide initiatives like distillation apprenticeships.

Also represented are Dr Anne Brock of Bombay Sapphire, combining scientific rigour and distillation expertise, and Kathy Caton MBE, emphasising governance and representation of smaller producers alongside larger houses.

Together, this leadership team ensures The Gin Guild remains a broad, inclusive forum for distillers, brand owners and trade stakeholders – blending tradition, modern craft, sustainability, technical expertise and global perspective to guide gin’s future worldwide.

Our History

Gin has a colourful and storied past – from its early beginnings in European apothecaries to the thriving global category it is today. The Gin Guild’s story is closely intertwined with that heritage.

The spirit’s origins can be traced back to the 1450s, when German distillers produced a juniper berry brandy, while housewives crafted spirits from beer and juniper berries at home.

By 1476, German chemist Michael Puff von Schlick published a distillation manual featuring a juniper spirit, followed in 1500 by Hieronymous Brunschwig’s publication of distillation recipes. In 1527, Lauren Andrewes translated Brunschwig’s work into English as The vertuoseboke of distyllacyon of the waters, bringing juniper spirits to London.

Following the founding of the Worshipful Company of Apothecaries of London in 1617, its 1618 standards manual included a distillate called aqua juniper ex granis or water of juniper.

By 1638, the Worshipful Company of Distillers was established to monitor commercial distillers and its 1639 manual, The Distiller of London, contained 34 recipes plus 16 variations, including one called aqua fructum – a spirit closely resembling modern gin.

Gin flourished over the centuries – from 18th-century London booms to the 19th-century rise of London Dry styles, followed by a mid-20th-century decline. The late 20th and early 21st centuries saw a renaissance, driven by innovation, craft distillers, and renewed consumer interest.

Amid this revival, the Gin Guild was founded in 2012, uniting the four founding companies with the Worshipful Company of Distillers.

The Grand Rectifier

At the heart of the Guild’s leadership sits the ceremonial head – the Grand Rectifier. This distinguished role is held by respected figures from the founding companies or leading members of the industry.

The Grand Rectifier presides over Guild installations, represents the Guild on formal occasions and embodies our values of excellence, integrity and fellowship. Working alongside the Board and the Director General, the Grand Rectifier supports the Guild’s mission and helps guide its work.

Traditionally, the role is held for a two-year term and has been held by industry heavyweights including

  1. Christopher Hayman, Hayman’s Distillers
  2. Ed Pilkington, Diageo
  3. Martin Riley, Pernod Ricard
  4. Dr Anne Brock, Bombay Sapphire
  5. Lesley Gracie, Hendrick’s
  6. Desmond Payne MBE, Beefeater
  7. Charles Maxwell, Thames Distillers

The Gin Guild Lifetime Achievement Award

The Gin Guild Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honour bestowed by the Guild.

It recognises individuals whose careers have made an exceptional and enduring contribution to gin distillation, whose influence extends beyond their own brands or businesses, and whose dedication has helped shape the global reputation of gin.

Awarded sparingly, the accolade celebrates not simply longevity, but impact – honouring those whose expertise, leadership and advocacy have strengthened the craft of gin and inspired others within the industry. Recipients are individuals who embody excellence in distillation and whose work has left a lasting legacy on the category.

Since its introduction, the award has been presented to a small and distinguished group of industry figures, each representing a different chapter in the modern renaissance of gin. Their collective contribution spans heritage, innovation, mentorship and global advocacy.

    Member Testimonials

Since my first interaction with Gin Guild members I have been overwhelmed by the welcoming atmosphere and true adherence to the mission of a Guild.  This is a remarkable group of friends and colleagues joined in the mission of advancing the business and culture of gin.

The Gin Guild not only unites the gin community across discipline— distillers and other industry leaders— but it unites the gin community across the world. I'm based in the U.S. but I feel part of a global community united through gin. Since joining in 2019, it's been amazing to see how educational events like Ginposium have transformed the way we share knowledge and the way we just talk about gin as professionals! Gin is truly in!

I have never in my career seen such a gathering of gin industry players.

When I was inducted into The Gin Guild in 2018, I didn’t fully grasp how meaningful that moment would become, not just for me personally, but for American gin more broadly. At the time, the United States was still finding its footing in the global gin conversation. Being welcomed into a community so deeply committed to connection, education, and the shared passion for this category was incredibly grounding. Gin is a spirit that thrives on creativity, precision, and personal vision. The Guild is a unique forum where those qualities are celebrated across borders and across generations. It does not merely preserve the past; it fuels our desire to elevate the category side by side. As interest in gin continues to grow here in the United States, having access to this kind of global insight and camaraderie is invaluable. The Guild reminds us we are part of a wider community of makers and dreamers, and it is in our shared commitment that we find our greatest inspiration.

The Guild connects us all, it protects us, and it enhances our business. It is a hub for regulatory guidance, support, information, introductions, and the ability to apply pressure in the right places!

The Gin Guild is an important institution and I think everyone agrees how beneficial this network is to all of us personally and professionally, as well as to the continued success of the gin category.

The Gin Guild has provided a community that I am proud to be a part of. I feel like by joining I actually became part of a family that provides constant support.

Joining the Gin Guild has been one of the most rewarding decisions I have made both personally and for Alpine Distilling as a business. The Guild offers a remarkable community of passionate, knowledgeable professionals who are committed to excellence in gin. From sustainability initiatives to educational resources and industry advocacy, the support and opportunities have been invaluable. It’s an organisation that truly elevates and unites the global gin community.

I cannot recommend membership of the Gin Guild highly enough; the access to networking, education, debate and information on legislative and production related issues as well as on trade and marketing topics is above the standard of any other industry body I know. And don’t doubt your eligibility for membership: if you are reading this, you are very likely not just eligible to join us, but would be a welcome addition to the Guild, which grows in numbers each year, adding members from new countries each time.

The Gin Guild has been instrumental in guiding and protecting this splendid and rapidly expanding spirit, and it has also given us all the opportunity to get to know each other and enjoy the fruits of our labours.

I greatly enjoy being a member of the Gin Guild. The network of gin friends and professionals is exceptional and a huge benefit not only to me personally but for the gin community of the spirits industry at large. Since joining in 2019 I have appreciated being included in both the educational initiatives and social opportunities this incredible group provides.

I am fascinated by the gin industry as it is so dynamic and diverse. Joining The Gin Guild has enabled me to connect with like-minded people in the industry and opens up an array of opportunities.

As a representative of family distiller William Grant and Sons it’s a great honour to be in a position where we have the opportunity through The Gin Guild to really help nurture the industry as it continues its exciting growth and explosion in innovation. We’re committed to driving excellence in the way that gin is served, as well as in the way it is distilled – because it’s integral that one supports the other.

I love gin. I would like to expand the gin market in Japan. Being part of this membership will help me remain motivated. It will also mean I’m in a good place to educate customers and bartenders more about gin and what I learn from The Gin Guild. And this should ensure customers will respect gin more than they used to.

Meeting the stalwarts in the industry and answering and asking key questions is one of the best features of membership. It's the "peer" group association that is priceless. Friends and experts for life. This factor is often missed when folks attend courses, conferences and events. It is one reason that live events rather than online seminars will continue to be the best avenue for organisations. Plus the invites to visit members at their distilleries are most welcome!

The Guild is the heart to which we are connected as Gin distillers, regardless of where we are in the world.
