Frequently Asked Questions

The Gin Guild’s Sustainability Toolkit is the gin industry's first comprehensive guide to greener practices. Developed with leading distillers and sustainability experts, it provides actionable strategies to help distilleries of all sizes reduce their environmental impact, meet consumer expectations, and future-proof their businesses.

Consumer demand for sustainable practices is rising. Our research (2024) found that 69% of UK gin drinkers believe sustainability is important when choosing a brand. At the same time, regulations and retailer expectations are evolving. The Toolkit helps distillers address environmental, social, and governance (ESG) challenges in a practical, achievable way.

The Gin Guild Sustainability Toolkit was created through a year-long collaboration involving leading distillers, sustainability experts, and industry stakeholders.
  • Drawing on insights from a working group that included representatives from global brands like Bombay Sapphire, Bacardi, Diageo, and Pernod Ricard, as well as pioneering micro-distillers such as Greensand Ridge and 58 & Co.
  • Reviewing international sustainability frameworks (such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Science-Based Targets, and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) to ensure the guidance is future-ready.
  • Conducting independent research into consumer expectations, retailer demands, and sustainability trends across the drinks industry.
  • Benchmarking best practices from inside and outside the gin sector to ensure the recommendations are practical and achievable for distilleries of all sizes.
The goal was to produce a gin-specific guide that balances ambition with action — offering "baby steps", "next steps", and "stretch goals" depending on where each distillery is starting from.

The Toolkit is designed for gin distillers of all sizes, from pioneering micro-distilleries to global brands. Whether you’re just beginning your sustainability journey or looking to enhance existing initiatives, it provides scalable, achievable solutions.

The Toolkit offers practical advice and checklists across key topics, including:
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Conserving water
  • Minimising waste
  • Sustainable packaging solutions
  • Protecting biodiversity
  • Ethical sourcing and supply chain management
  • Measuring, reporting, and governance best practices.

The full Sustainability Toolkit is free to Gin Guild members. Non-members can access the Toolkit by purchasing the full Toolkit for £495, or by joining the Gin Guild to unlock full benefits at no extra cost.

Absolutely. The Toolkit was specifically designed to provide simple starting actions, next steps, and stretch goals so that distilleries at all levels of sustainability maturity can make meaningful progress.

Implementing the Toolkit’s strategies can help distilleries:
  • Cut operational costs (especially through energy and water savings)
  • Attract eco-conscious consumers
  • Meet retailer and investor expectations
  • Demonstrate commitment to responsible, ethical practices.

The Toolkit is structured to be approachable. Each section includes:
  • Why the topic matters
  • A checklist of actions, split into "starting out" and "further along" stages
  • Case studies from industry leaders to inspire and guide your journey.

Yes! Each Toolkit section includes downloadable worksheets to help distillers measure and track sustainability initiatives over time.

#TenGreenBottles is the Gin Guild’s Earth Day 2025 campaign designed to unite distilleries across the industry in adopting greener practices. It encourages businesses to share their sustainability stories and inspire others.
