Charles Maxwell is a distinguished figure in the gin industry, celebrated for his extensive expertise and contributions as a master distiller, including being one of only five recipients of the Gin Guild’s Lifetime achievement award. His family’s distilling heritage dates back to the 17th century, with his eighth great-grandfather apprenticed as a distiller in London in the 1680s. Continuing this legacy, Charles represents the tenth generation of his family to engage in the craft.
In 1996, Charles founded Thames Distillers, an independent gin rectifier, spirits processor, and bottler based in London. The company specialises in developing and producing gins for a diverse clientele, ranging from large international brands to local bars and entrepreneurs entering the spirits market. Under his leadership, Thames Distillers has been instrumental in the creation of numerous gin brands, contributing significantly to the global gin renaissance.
Throughout his career with Thames Distillers, Charles has created over 300 gins, and his influence extends beyond production; he has served as a judge for many international spirits competitions, bringing his extensive knowledge to the evaluation of spirits on global platforms.
Under his stewardship, Thames Distillers continues to thrive as a leading entity in the gin industry, upholding a family tradition that has been integral to London’s distilling heritage for over three centuries.
