Nicholas Cook, the inaugural Director General of the Gin Guild, has been presented with the Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award, becoming only the fifth member to receive this prestigious accolade.

Nicholas served as Director General from 2012 to 2022, a decade in which he single-handedly created the office and organisational structure of the Guild, establishing it as the leading authority on gin distillation worldwide. Over this period, he campaigned tirelessly on behalf of members and the wider gin distilling community, championing excellence, innovation and authenticity across the industry.

Guild Chairman Christopher Hayman, a distiller with more than 50 years’ experience, commented:

“When we created the Gin Guild, never in our wildest dreams did we expect membership to reach 400 as it will at our October event. Nicholas Cook has brought great energy and determination to the role, creating successful events and tirelessly promoting Gin-Note, the Guild’s flavour guidance system. He has done an incredible job and the Guild wouldn’t be where it is today without him.”

During his tenure, Nicholas oversaw the development of Guild programmes to support both emerging and established distillers, promoted education and knowledge-sharing, and strengthened the global reputation of British gin. He has been pivotal in raising standards across the category, ensuring the Guild’s influence and guidance are respected both in the UK and internationally.

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises Nicholas Cook’s vision, dedication and leadership, reflecting his lasting contribution to the Guild and the wider gin industry. His work has cemented a legacy of excellence and positioned the Gin Guild for continued growth and influence in the years to come.
