Desmond Payne, Master Distiller of Beefeater and creator of Beefeater 24, was presented with the Gin Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Guild’s Annual Autumn Installation, held at Mansion House in the City of London.

This distinguished honour – presented to only two other industry figures in the preceding three years – recognises exceptional and sustained contribution to the gin category. Desmond was formally presented with the award during the bi-annual banquet by the Master of the Worshipful Company of Distillers, Allan Cheesman, together with the Gin Guild’s newly appointed Grand Rectifier, Martin Riley.

Desmond’s career in gin began in 1967 when he joined Seager Evans & Co., the wine merchants and gin distillers. From the outset, his talent and commitment to the craft were evident. Over the decades that followed, his expertise, dedication and instinctive understanding of botanicals and balance established him as one of the most respected figures in British distilling.

In 2005, Desmond was appointed Master Distiller at Beefeater, becoming custodian of one of the world’s most iconic London Dry gin brands. His stewardship has ensured continuity of style while embracing innovation where appropriate. In 2008, he created Beefeater 24, a super-premium expression that broadened the brand’s portfolio and demonstrated his refined approach to botanical composition.

With nearly half a century in distilling at the time of the award, Desmond’s contribution extended far beyond production alone. He has overseen the development of limited editions, championed quality and authenticity, and served as an ambassador for London gin at home and abroad. He is widely regarded as an inspiration within the industry and is legendary for his generosity in sharing his experience and knowledge with others.

In presenting this Lifetime Achievement Award, the Gin Guild recognised not only Desmond Payne’s remarkable professional accomplishments, but also his enduring influence on the reputation and global standing of gin.

The Guild is proud to honour a distiller whose dedication, craftsmanship and leadership have helped shape modern gin while upholding its historic traditions.
