The Gin Guild is proud to announce that Charles Maxwell of Thames Distillers has been named the inaugural recipient of the Gin Guild Lifetime Achievement Award.

This prestigious honour was created to recognise individuals who have made an exceptional and enduring contribution to the distillation and global promotion of gin. It is fitting that the first recipient of this award is Charles Maxwell – a distiller whose name has become synonymous with craftsmanship, integrity and continuity within the gin category.

Charles represents one of the oldest distilling families in the United Kingdom, with an unbroken lineage in distillation dating back to the 1680s. This remarkable heritage has been carried forward through generations, with the Maxwell family playing a significant role in the evolution and preservation of London gin.

Having begun his distilling career within the family business, Charles has devoted his professional life to the art and science of gin distillation. At Thames Distillers in London, he has quietly and consistently produced gins of the highest quality for clients across the globe. His technical mastery, meticulous approach and generosity in sharing expert knowledge have earned him profound respect throughout the international spirits community.

Beyond his production achievements, Charles has been a steadfast ambassador for gin at a time when the category was undergoing renewal and global resurgence. His guidance and mentorship have supported countless emerging brands, helping to shape what has become one of the most dynamic periods in gin’s modern history.

In presenting this award, the Gin Guild recognises not only a lifetime of professional accomplishment, but also a deep commitment to safeguarding the standards, traditions and reputation of gin distillation worldwide.

Charles Maxwell’s contribution to gin is both historic and ongoing. The Guild is honoured to celebrate his achievements and to acknowledge his lasting influence on the industry.
