Alpine Distilling’s new production facility occupies the historic Union Pacific Roundhouse in Evanston, Wyoming, bringing contemporary spirits production to a remarkable landmark of American industrial heritage.
Built in 1912, the Roundhouse formed part of a 27-acre railway complex developed to service locomotives and railcars travelling along Union Pacific’s western mainline. The substantial brick building features 28 locomotive bays and curved walls rising approximately 30 feet. Today, the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and recognised by the City of Evanston as the last remaining intact roundhouse on the former Union Pacific mainline between Omaha and Sacramento.
Following decades of preservation and restoration, Alpine Distilling became the first operational business to occupy the space in 50 years, returning manufacturing activity to a building with a rich history of engineering, craftsmanship and industrial innovation.
Opened in 2026, the facility represents the largest expansion in Alpine Distilling’s ten-year history. It provides additional capacity for the production of the distillery’s grain-to-glass whiskeys, internationally recognised gins and botanical spirits. The premises will also create opportunities for visitors to discover the processes behind spirits production through educational experiences and retail.
The Roundhouse provides a fitting environment for distilling, an industry that similarly relies on skilled hands, technical precision, machinery and patience. Its railway heritage reflects a tradition of making and maintaining, now continued through the transformation of raw ingredients into finished spirits.
For Alpine Distilling, the project is about more than expanding production. It represents an opportunity to preserve an important part of Wyoming’s industrial history while giving the building a renewed purpose. By bringing distilling back into this historic space, the distillery connects the craftsmanship of the past with contemporary American spirits production, establishing a new chapter in the story of Evanston’s celebrated Roundhouse.
