Trevethan Distillery launches “biggest innovation of the century” in gin

Cornish based chemist-turned-master distiller and Gin Guild member John Hall from Trevethan Distillery proudly introduces Aureus Vita (Golden Life) – heralded as the single greatest innovation in gin for a generation. Crafted using the pioneering Fibonacci-Hall Distillation Method, this innovative approach applies the Golden Ratio of 1:1.618 — found throughout nature, art and architecture—to the world of gin making.

Distilled within the unique and patent pending Fibonacci-Hall still, the result is a gin of unparalleled balance and refinement, a true masterpiece.

This groundbreaking spirit, launched in March 2025, brings with it a new category – The Fibonacci Dry Gin – as it reimagines the art of gin making through the alchemy of mathematics and science.

Aureus Vita represents a long quest to distill a gin with unsurpassed balance, depth of flavour and finish. John Hall, founder of the Trevethan Distillery, and his team previously revived a 1920s family bathtub gin recipe from Norman Trevethan. Their debut gin, Original 1929 London Dry Gin, scored an outstanding 98 points at the 2022 IWSC awards.

The accolade sparked a relentless quest of improvement, but this could only be done by elevating the entire distillation process. John leveraged his scientific expertise to perfect the most precisely balanced gin in the world.

Developing the Fibonacci-Hall Distillation Method — a process inspired by the Fibonacci sequence, he set out to achieve unparalleled harmony and complexity in a spirit.

Distilled once a year in the autumn when the most vibrant juniper and baobab have not long been harvested, Aureus Vita is limited in production with each year’s expression unique — this year marks the first vintage from 2024’s production.

John said:

It stands as a bold reinvention of the gin category, applying the mathematical elegance of the Golden Ratio, 1:1.618, to extraction, distillation and dilution for unparalleled balance.

Extraction begins with precise equations to calculate botanical quantities, ensuring a 1:1.618 ratio by weight between each of up to 10 botanicals including the finest juniper delivering classic piney notes and rare baobab seeds imparting a citrusy, sherbet-like quality. Eight additional botanicals remain a closely guarded secret.

Using the only-existing Fibonacci-Hall still in the world, the base spirit is diluted to 61.8% ABV, before being re-distilled with the perfectly balanced botanicals aligning with the Golden Ratio to optimise flavour extraction from each botanical.

Finally, the finished gin is diluted to maintain this same ratio between water and alcohol, ensuring a perfectly balanced solution of water, alcohol and oils. This method guarantees harmonious flavors and enables precise adjustments with scientific precision.

This launch marks a key moment for the scientific gin community, breaking free from traditional methods and celebrating progress, creativity and innovation. Aureus Vita is not only powerful, with a smooth and bold flavour profile, but also exceptionally versatile.
