Portsmouth Distillery’s new Navy Strength Gin is a bold, higher-proof expression of its house style, reflecting both maritime heritage and the distillery’s coastal setting at Fort Cumberland in Portsmouth.
At Navy Strength – typically bottled at around 57% ABV – the gin is designed to deliver greater intensity of flavour, with juniper and citrus becoming more pronounced while retaining balance and clarity.
The release, to celebrate Portsmouth’s 100th Anniversary of it’s City status, builds on the distillery’s established gin range and its reputation for creating spirits inspired by naval history and the surrounding sea.
Navy Strength gins historically originated from the Royal Navy era, when higher-strength spirits were carried on ships because they could withstand accidental spillage of gunpowder – a legacy that continues to influence the category today.
This expression is crafted to stand up in cocktails, particularly in classic serves such as a Gin & Tonic or Martini, where its concentrated botanical profile provides structure and depth. Expect a robust juniper core, lifted by bright citrus peel and subtle spice, with a long, warming finish that reflects its elevated strength.
