19th July, 2012
NOTE: The Guild was renamed from The London Guild of Gin Distillers to The Gin Guild in October 2012.
London, United Kingdom, 19th July 2012 – The gin industry has united to celebrate the official launch of The London Guild of Gin Distillers, a new body dedicated to promoting and protecting the excellence, heritage and integrity of gin.
Formally established on Tuesday 17th July 2012 in London, The Gin Guild aims to bring together distillers, brand owners, ambassadors and industry professionals from across the world to collaborate in advancing the quality, reputation and understanding of gin.
The Guild operates under the auspices of the Worshipful Company of Distillers, one of London’s ancient Livery Companies, linking centuries of distilling tradition with the exciting revival currently taking place in the gin category.
A Shared Commitment to Excellence
Membership of The Gin Guild is open to those who actively promote the gin industry and uphold the highest standards of distillation, production, and service. Founding members who officially join the Guild on 17th October 2012 will include representatives from the leading gin producers and respected figures who have each contributed significantly to the formation of the Guild (Bacardi, Pernod Ricard Chivas Brothers, Diageo and William Grant & Sons).
The Guild’s mission is to provide a forum for discussion, professional development, and collaboration, while safeguarding the authenticity and quality that define gin’s enduring appeal.
Preserving Tradition, Promoting Innovation
At a time when gin is enjoying a renaissance both in the UK and internationally, The Gin Guild aims to celebrate its history while encouraging innovation and creativity. Through events, inductions (known as Installations in line with ancient Livery traditions) and industry engagement, the Guild will champion knowledge-sharing, responsible marketing, and continued excellence in gin making.
Speaking ahead of the inaugural installation, Christopher Hayman, the first Chairman of the Board of The Gin Guild, said:
“The Gin Guild aims to provide a home for all those who are passionate about gin – from distillers to brand owners, from large heritage houses to new craft producers. Our aim is to ensure that the current enthusiasm for gin continues to be underpinned by quality, integrity and shared pride in the spirit’s rich tradition.”

While founded in London – the historic heart of gin – The Gin Guild looks outward, seeking to unite the international community of gin professionals and enthusiasts.
