The Isle of Wight Distillery is a relatively young but now well-respected name in the British craft spirits scene, founded in 2014 by Xavier Baker and Conrad Gauntlett. It was the first licenced distillery on the Isle of Wight, born out of the founders’ combined experience in brewing and winemaking.
Their flagship gin is Mermaid Gin, crafted with influence from the island’s natural environment. Botanicals include locally foraged rock samphire, Boadicea hops grown at Ventnor Botanic Gardens, elderflower, lemon zest, grains of paradise and other herbal and citrus notes. Rock samphire in particular contributes a subtle saline, coastal “sea-air” character to the spirit.
Aside from Mermaid Gin, they produce other variants such as Mermaid Pink Gin and Mermaid Zest Gin. Mermaid Zest is a limited-edition London Dry style gin, enhanced with grapefruit, Cascade hops, island bergamot, lemon zest and foraged coastal rosemary (“the dew of the sea”) and housed in an emerald-green, scaled bottle.
As part of their commitment to conservation they’re proactive in helping to protect the island’s marine environment and they have a strong emphasis on sustainability: materials are carefully chosen to be recyclable or biodegradable; the bottle designs aim to reduce waste; packaging avoids plastic; also local sourcing and ethical foraging are core to their operations.
Overall, Isle of Wight Distillery has made a distinctive place for itself by combining local, coastal botanicals with strong sustainable values, elegant design, and a steadily growing portfolio of spirits.
