This fruit is native to high-altitude, tropical Peru, where the fruits grow wild, ‘aguaymanto’ is locally eaten and frequently sold in markets.
The berry has a distinctive sweet, almost tart like flavour, which works in tandem with the citrus botanicals to add a bit of sweetness. Due to its global popularity and unique taste, it has been widely introduced into cultivation in other tropical, subtropical and even temperate areas, such as China, India, and Malaysia. It is also known as the Cape Gooseberry where it was also subsequently cultivated.
