The Gin Guild was delighted to support celebrations in Turkmenistan marking His Majesty The King’s Official Birthday, which this year coincided with World Gin Day on 14 June.

At a reception hosted by the British Embassy in Ashgabat, guests were invited to discover the diversity and quality of British gin through a dedicated gin stand featuring 13 different expressions.

Gin celebration in TurkmenistanTo help showcase the breadth of the UK’s gin industry, the Gin Guild provided a map highlighting its UK corporate members, which was prominently displayed throughout the event.

According to His Majesty’s Ambassador to Turkmenistan, Stephen Conlon, the map attracted considerable interest from attendees and provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the regional diversity of British gin.

Ambassador Conlon also used the map during a conversation with Turkmenistan’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economy and Finance, highlighting the strength and geographical spread of the UK’s gin sector.

The reception welcomed around 350 guests and proved a resounding success for gin. Despite a range of drinks being available, all of the gin served during the event had been enjoyed within three and a half hours!

Feedback from attendees suggested that many guests had previously viewed gin as a traditional or old-fashioned spirit but were pleasantly surprised by the variety of styles available.

Several guests reportedly went on to purchase gin following the event, having discovered a newfound appreciation for the category!

The event may also lead to new commercial opportunities, with discussions taking place with a local wine importer who is considering importing gin into Turkmenistan.

Reflecting on the event, Ambassador Conlon noted that it had helped increase awareness and appreciation of gin among an influential audience and demonstrated the growing international appeal of the category.

The Gin Guild extends its thanks to the British Embassy in Ashgabat for its support in promoting British gin and helping introduce new consumers to the diversity, quality and craftsmanship that define the UK’s gin industry.
